"FLOATING THROUGH LIFE" - AN ORIGINAL BY

Erskine Knowles wrote the first verse of his song "Floating Through
Life" while he was walking around Goodman's Bay, Nassau, Bahamas, for
exercise in 2018. He noticed how many beachgoers were smoking, drinking or
taking drugs. He thought to himself that they were just floating through life
like a butterfly, without a care in the world.

It was after Erskine's surgery in 2013, when he became clinically dead from
loss of blood and had to be brought back to life by the doctors, that he was
inspired to write more songs. He hadn't written any since the 50's. However, he
had kept on playing guitar and singing every chance he could get (in The Bahamas,
Miami Beach, on a ship to England, around Devon and Scotland). He had his own
band in the mid-sixties at the Lisbon Club, Bay Street, and they also played at
parties around New Providence.

"HOW GREAT THOU ART" AUTHOR PAUL BETHEL & MUSICIAN ERSKINE KNOWLES
A good friend of ours, Bahamian author Paul Bethel, stopped by yesterday afternoon and he and Erskine had an impromptu musical get together, singing "How Great Thou Art". They had never sung together before, but Paul sings in his church.
THE BACKGROUND TO THIS BEAUTIFUL HYMN:
Young Swedish Pastor Carl Boberg and some friends were walking home in 1885 to Mönsterås from Kronobäck, Sweden, where they had participated in an afternoon church service. A thundercloud appeared on the horizon and lightning flashed across the sky. Strong winds swept over the meadows and billowing fields of grain.
The thunder pealed in loud claps. Then rain came in cool fresh showers. In a little while the storm was over, and a rainbow appeared.
When Boberg arrived home, he opened the window and saw the bay of Mönsterås like a mirror before him. From the woods on the other side of the bay, he heard the song of a thrush and the church bells were tolling in the quiet evening. It was this series of sights, sounds, and experiences that inspired his writing of the song "O Store Gud" which became the Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art”.
The English version of the hymn and its title are a loose translation by the English missionary Stuart K. Hine from 1949. The hymn was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during Billy Graham's crusades.
It was voted the British public's
favourite hymn by BBC's Songs of Praise. "How Great Thou Art" was
ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favourite
hymns of all time in a survey by Christianity Today magazine in 2001 and in a
nationwide poll by Songs Of Praise in 2019.

HISTORY OF A GUITAR
One of our followers at on our tiktok platform asked: "I like your
music. Where did you get your guitar?"
My husband Erskine has had many guitars (electric as
well as accoustic) but he bought this accoustic guitar from a music store in
Davie, Florida in the early nineties. It was made by Hohner, one of the oldest
German guitar makers.

A MEDLEY OF CALYPSO SONGS!
“A Medley of Calypso Songs” is sung and played HERE by my husband Erskine on his guitar. This is another song from our Tiktok platform "youngheartsforever". These songs are folklore and quite old.
I often wonder how Erskine has such a good memory! He
knows the words and music of hundreds of songs: Bahamian, Caribbean, Rhythm
& Blues, Rock, Soft Rock, Romance, Blues, Country & Western, and so on!
He says he once had a book with 900 chords that he
studied - "All kinds of chords". Along with the major and minor chords
that he already knew, he learned 300 more but he says he hardly ever uses all
of them. He could use them if he wanted to though and he does use a lot of them
in songs.
Thank goodness Erskine has this remarkable memory as I
am quite the opposite!
