A BLAST FROM THE PAST!

 

This brightened up my day! A friend sent me this newspaper cutting that appeared on The Bideford History Page of Facebook. The photo was taken about 60 years ago! I did have a faded copy, but it was minus the caption. 

It was interesting to have a reminder about "Bideford Musicals", that I'd once belonged to. I'm second from the left ("Fay Johanson"). 

I also did ballet as a young child and at the age of twenty was a chorus girl in a production at The Exeter Little Theatre, Devon. As well as a writer, I'd always wanted to be a singer or a dancer!

PASSING OF LEGENDARY BAHAMIAN MUSIC ICON RONNIE BUTLER

We were saddened yesterday to learn of the passing of legendary Bahamian entertainer and cultural music icon Ronnie Butler. Ronnie was born in 1937 and was made a Member of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 2003.

We loved his singing, especially when we went dancing in the “Big Bamboo” on downtown Bay Street in the sixties. And when we moved to England for a year in the seventies I used to dance around the living room to Ronnie’s lively and charismatic records, feeling very homesick for The Bahamas!

JULIEN BELIEVE MAKES IT HAPPEN!

Bahamian singer/song writer Julien "Believe" Thompson lives by his name! He thinks BIG and that’s why his dedication to his music and singing is really taking him places. Last year he sang in China for one billion viewers at the Miss World 2015 pageant finale!

Julien writes on his Facebook page that his father inspired him to think BIG and he started at quite a young age to do this. He was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, and always wanted to be a musician. He says that by the age of eleven he was selling his own lunch to buy CDs! Then when he was twelve he joined a singing group at his church. He relates how the group became so popular around the island they performed as an opening act for local shows and top visiting entertainers.

He also excelled in basketball, but gave up the opportunity to attend college in Oklahoma on a basketball scholarship in order to pursue his first love, music.
