Knowles’s skill is to keep a short story short. She sticks to the bones of the
story and includes no superfluous details, but simply enough for us to get to
know the characters. In this way, she maintains the pace of the story with one
link of information leading to the next. The reader's interest does not flag
and sometimes the ending is refreshingly unexpected."
