MADE IT “TO” THE ROYAL WEDDING!

Well, I managed to get up early and had the T.V. on by a few minutes after 7 a.m. Harry and Meghan were already at the altar, but there have been enough reruns during the day for me to catch up.

What an amazing wedding. It was traditional in many ways, but sprinkled liberally with aspects of modern day times. The bride was beautiful and the groom so handsome. The bride’s mother was lovely too and very serene – a groom can always get an idea of what their bride will be like later in life from how their mother looks!

Meghan apparently had all of the Commonwealth emblems embroidered into her veil. Living in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas we will look forward to hearing more about Harry and Meghan’s plans for getting further involved in the Commonwealth. I have great hopes that this couple, who show so much love for each other and a mutual passion for humanitarian causes, will make a difference in the world.

THE ROYAL WEDDING

(Photo by Leah Kelley from Pexels)

So Prince Charles is giving Meghan Markle away on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Harry! I always thought it had to be someone on the bride's side of the family if her father wasn’t available. My husband’s boss gave me away when I got married in The Bahamas. He was British, so sort of represented my side. Anyway, best wishes to the happy couple!

I will try to get up early tomorrow morning, as I really want to watch this exciting event on television. The wedding starts at 12 noon UK time, but it will only be 7 a.m. here in The Bahamas.

100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE!

Wedding - Josephine and William Johanson

The Royal Air Force was founded 100 years ago today! My mother, the late Josephine Johanson, enlisted in the Women’s Royal Air Force during the Second World War and served as a Radio Telephony Operator at a Receiving/Transmission Station, giving pilots on active duty bearings for home. During that time she met my father, the late William Johanson, an Aircraft Instrument Repairer serving in the Royal Australian Air Force.

I touch on this little piece of my family history in “The Scottish Connection: A Journey”, my illustrated mini-memoir of my 1978 journey back to Scotland with my mother and young sons, to revisit our Scottish roots.

LONG ISLAND FEATURES IN ROMANTIC SUSPENSE NOVEL LOVE AT SUNSET!

Here’s one of the Long Island scenes from my Romantic Suspense novel “Love at Sunset”, which is set in The Bahamas and Scotland! …..

“Halfway there, he stopped the car abruptly, cursing. A small herd of goats stood in front of him. He was about to manoeuvre his way around them, but hesitated when the leader of the herd bolted out of the bushes, onto the track, and blocked his way. The large ram stood, flexing his strong shoulders and shaking his sharp horns. He stared directly at Tate for a moment and then lunged towards the car, scattering his harem. Tate pressed the gas pedal and swerving back and forwards to avoid a collision with the huge creature, managed to speed past it.

“He looked back as he drove away from the herd. They stood watching him, not moving.”

About Love at Sunset:

“Facing imminent danger and fierce opposition to love a second time around, Violet and Gordon seek a new life thousands of miles away, but trouble soon catches up with them. The couple finds themselves in and out of one adventure after another!

”In the meantime, an unscrupulous attorney appears on the scene, along with a crooked realtor. What they do and the extent they would go to leads to a shocking ending. Greed, jealousy, family secrets and bitter grudges worm their way throughout this story!”

Stefanie claims to know otherwise unheard-of facts as related to the shocking catastrophe of long ago where so many had perished, but no one in their right mind believes her. CHINESE NEW YEAR IN BAHA MAR!

Erskine with Chinese New Year decorations in Baha Mar

One of the dragon decorations in Baha Mar, just off the Casino

Another dragon decoration in Baha Mar

Some of the parasol decorations in Baha Mar
It’s Chinese New Year for the huge, luxury Baha Mar Resort, owned by Hong Kong based conglomerate Chow Tai Fook Enterprises!

Baha Mar is a $4.2 billion, 1,000 acre development on half a mile of beachfront in Cable Beach, Nassau, Bahamas. Little did Erskine and I know when we leased a small apartment in Cable Beach some years ago that we would be neighbours of this exotic and glamorous resort!

Baha Mar boasts three hotel brands - Grand Hyatt, SLS Hotels and Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, with a total of 2,300 rooms.

It consists of a 100,000 square foot casino (the largest in the Caribbean), overlooking the ocean. There are also forty-two restaurants and lounges, thirty luxury retailers, an eighteen hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and Golf Club, and eleven swimming pools.

When Baha Mar first opened, Erskine and I would park free of charge outside in one of the expansive car parks and stroll through the resort to have coffee in Starbucks. However, now all of the car parks have signs, stating $10 parking. If we pay that for parking, it makes it a very expensive cup of coffee!

GET ROMANTIC!

With Valentine’s Day coming up, why not try a little romance?! “Sunbeams from the Heart – A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories” made Amazon's top 100 paid best-sellers' list in the Literature & Fiction/Short stories category and was next to Stephen King’s “Hearts in Atlantis” in Amazon's Best Sellers in Literary Short Stories at #69, with “Hearts in Atlantis” at #67! And one month later Sunbeams from the Heart again made the top 100 paid bestsellers' list in the Literature & Fiction/Short Stories category, this time alongside Agatha Christie's “Miss Marple - The Complete Short Stories”. Sunbeams from the Heart was #44 and “Miss Marple” was #45.

Love themes in “Sunbeams from the Heart – A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories” tell of nostalgia, bright new beginnings, homecoming, second chances, and the unexpected.

My romantic short stories feature a man and a woman who meet in quite ordinary or sometimes unexpected circumstances. I like to bring two people together, who had no idea they might end up with each other. Of course, in most cases there is a stumbling block to their future happiness. True love does not always come easy!

One reviewer from the U.S. wrote: “What a pleasure to come across twelve wholesome and romantic short stories as found in Sunbeams From The Heart, by Fay Knowles. While each story is unique, all share that one common thread we humans yearn for: LOVE. Page after page, Knowles artfully describes native landscapes, to the point the reader can almost inhale the scent of flowers. One can’t help but smile while Knowles steers the reader and characters along that slightly bumpy path of love. Valentine or not, Sunbeams From The Heart is indeed a delightful read.”

And from a reviewer in New Zealand: “A delightful collection of romantic stories, ideal for holiday reading or any time you want your heart warmed. So good to find a collection of stories that end on a satisfying note.”

Try a little romance. You might like it!

“Sunbeams from the Heart – A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories” is available from Amazon as an e-book and in paperback (regular and large print). Or order the paperback through your local book store.

WELCOMING NEW YEAR IN NASSAU BAHAMAS!

PART OF A DISCARDED JUNKANOO FLOAT
IN DOWNTOWN NASSAU NEW YEAR 2018

Last night we brought the New Year in by watching Baha Mar’s spectacular fireworks display from our window. Then after lunch today Erskine and I headed over to Atlantis on Paradise Island. The streets were still being cleaned up after “Junkanoo” that started early this morning. A few discarded remnants of Junkanoo floats and costumes lay on the pavements.

“Junkanoo” is a vibrant pulsating street festival and competition that usually takes place in The Bahamas in the early hours of Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Year’s Day. The roots of Junkanoo can be traced back to West Africa. It is said that the name originated from that of “John Canoe”, an African tribal chief.

Groups of participants spend months prior to Junkanoo in the “shacks” making elaborate costumes and floats out of crepe paper, cardboard, beads, sequins and other innovative materials. Tourists and residents alike huddle on bleachers or hang over balconies on Bay Street in downtown Nassau to watch the floats and performers pass by. Spectators revel in the sound of rhythmic cow bells, whistles, goat skin or steel drums and horns; the kaleidoscopic costumes; and the enthralling dancing called “rushing”. Other islands of The Bahamas also have their own Junkanoo rushes.

We parked in the pay parking opposite the Riu Paradise Hotel and walked through Atlantis to Marina Village for a coffee in Starbucks. The weather was sunny and the temperature about 78 degrees. A perfect New Year’s Day!

Wishing you all a very Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year!
