MINIMAL DAMAGE TO SOUTHERN BAHAMAS IN HURRICANE MATTHEW

“The Tribune”, Nassau, Bahamas, reported in its “Hurricane Special Edition” Friday, October 7th, 2016, about the southern Bahamas: “ – the eye of Matthew missed most of those islands, causing minimal damage to them.”

This was a relief. Long Island, where Erskine was born and brought up, is located in the southern Bahamas, and it was badly hit by Hurricane Joaquin a year ago.

  1. Phew! I'm sure it was quite worrying enough to get the fringes (or whatever the bit around the eye is called) of the hurricane though.

    1. Yes, Patsy! They still got tropical storm winds. When we spoke to Erskine's sister on Long Island she said she lost a lot of her plants and trees. However, thankfully they didn't get any storm surge this time.

  2. We have so much to be thankful for in The Bahamas. It really could have been much worse. I'm so glad those Out Islands weren't hit hard again after having to suffer through Joaquin last year.

    1. Yes, we do, Tanya! Last year during Joaquin Erskine's sister and her husband on Long Island had to be rescued from their house, which flooded when the storm surge rolled in to the low lying areas. They had to replace all their furniture.
