LIVE EXMOUTH AIR RADIO INTERVIEW!

Well, I've done it! Had a live radio interview early this morning by Exmouth Air Radio Presenter Howard James. My first one ever! Had to get up at 5.15 a.m. for 6.20 a.m. start (Bahamas time) and I'm not normally an early riser!

The interview lasted about 40 minutes and from Tuesday will run 24/7 for two weeks on Exmouth Air Radio's website. The segment will be downloadable from Tuesday, so I'll post the link when it's available. Howard had contacted me about my books after reading one of my Devon press releases.

I am so excited! Exmouth Air (Devon, England) Radio Presenter Howard James will be interviewing me on his show Sunday, May 10th, about the latest book in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series, Deadly Deceit In Paradise (as well as Book One in the series - Dangerous Devotion), with questions such as what was my inspiration for the books; my background; my link to Exmouth; why I moved to The Bahamas and my life here; why I moved to Devon years ago and my life there; my published work; how people can find out more and obtain my books; and future plans for more books.

Howard James, a former BBC radio presenter, has a long career in broadcasting. And Exmouth Air covers a wide area that includes Exmouth, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Topsham, Sidmouth, and Budleigh Salterton.

I will have to get up early for the interview, as the U.K. is five hours ahead of The Bahamas. Won't be easy, but I'll do anything for my craft!

TOPSHAM ESTUARY MAGAZINE ROCKS!

How kind of the editors of the Estuary Magazine, a monthly publication in Topsham, Devon, England, to feature my press release “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number” on page 47 of their November 2019 issue.

This article features my book “Moonbeams from the Soul: A Collection of Fourteen Provocative Short Stories”. And there is also a link for those who wish to help with Hurricane Dorian Relief.

Topsham is a lovely little town on the river estuary, where my mother lived for thirty-seven years of her life. And my family and I visited this beautiful spot over and over again throughout the years. Estuary Editors Diana Trout and José Northey have done a fabulous job with this latest bumper issue. It makes me feel quite nostalgic for Topsham!

SONGS BY ERSKINE KNOWLES!

My husband Erskine is a great guitarist and vocalist (I think I’m permitted to say that!). He started playing guitar at the age of fifteen, but played the kettle drum before that (once he was in a wedding procession on Long Island as a small boy, playing the drums!). He also learned to play the accordion.

When we met in 1965 he was playing in a band called “The Invaders” in the old Lisbon Club on Bay Street, downtown Nassau. See my blog post Bahamian Music is Blowing in the Wind.

Since then he’s jammed with a lot of musicians over the years in The Bahamas and England. He’s played with Jay Mitchell’s band in the British Colonial Hotel, Nassau; “Little Joe Cartwright” in Count Basie Square, Freeport, Grand Bahama; Count Bernadino and his daughter Nita Ellis at Westwinds II, Nassau; musicians in a pub in Exmouth, England; pubs around Exeter, England (with me singing along with him); entertained on the SS Oronsay on the way to England; formed a two man band with our son Gavin called “Roadblock” while we were living in Long Island (with other musicians coming down to join them at gigs around the island); the former Holiday Inn, Paradise Island, with Buddy Rae; and at the former “Buzz” night club and Crazy Johnny’s on East Bay Street, Nassau, with such musicians as the late Berkley Van Byrd.

I was delighted to receive word that my pictorial mini memoir “The Scottish Connection” has featured in the April 2017 issue of “Estuary” magazine, Topsham, Devon, England. The Scottish Connection is available on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback.

“Estuary” is a vibrant 64-page monthly community magazine for Topsham, available from Topsham News, The Topsham Bookshop, other local shops, and from St Margaret's Church.

Regular items include a diary of local events and talks; news of local societies, groups, clubs and associations and their contact details, together with those of local services and amenities. Other contributions include Estuary lifestyle articles about artisan food and wine producers; choirs and concerts; poetry, and reports of ventures or adventures.

MEMORIES FROM ANOTHER PLACE, ANOTHER TIME!

One of the places I lived in while growing up was Buckingham, England. My parents ran a watch repair and jewellery store there and I attended the Royal Latin Grammar School. I never knew that one day I would be living in a tropical island nation where many of their lawyers get their training from University of Buckingham Law School!

Now the Buckingham and Winslow Advertiser has kindly run an article about my newly published mini-memoir The Scottish Connection. It’s great to have other connections too!

A VERY SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR

This time of year always reminds me of the last time I saw my mother ten years ago. As Christmas approached, Erskine came up with the exciting suggestion that we should surprise Mum and fly to England for Christmas. She used to always visit us in The Bahamas during winters and spend Christmas and New Year with us, but those visits were sadly coming to a close as she got older.

I booked our flights, arranged for us to stay in holiday accommodation close to Mum so we wouldn’t put her out in any way, and even booked Christmas Dinner for three at a nearby hotel.

It was difficult for me to keep the secret, but once all our plans and bookings were made I called Mum to give her our surprise. I’ll never forget how happy she was and what a special Christmas and New Year that was. I am so glad we did this and am grateful to Erskine for making it possible, as three months later my dear mother passed away suddenly.

EXETER MEMORIES GO UP IN FLAMES – HISTORIC ROYAL CLARENCE HOTEL DESTROYED

I was saddened to learn of the destruction by fire in the early hours of Friday, October 28th, of the wonderful old Royal Clarence Hotel, Exeter, Devon. England's oldest hotel, originally a 17th century coaching inn, had become an Abode Hotel. Thankfully, there were no deaths or injuries.

My late mother worked as Head Receptionist at the Royal Clarence for many years. I remember waiting in the Cathedral Green with my grandmother while Mum applied for the job. She was very happy there.

I mention the Royal Clarence Hotel in my short story “Hocus Pocus”, which appears in “Sunbeams from the Heart – A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories”.

It was announced that there are plans to rebuild the hotel.
