BRING SOME SUNBEAMS INTO YOUR LIFE!

“A summer breeze ruffled Peggy's hair. She gazed upwards at the old Devon house, her home so many decades ago. It had been built sideways against a steep embankment and stood regally on its own above a row of terraced dwellings. Strangers would be living there now, but she had to see it one more time...” -  Excerpt from my short story "The Rose Bower", which appears in "Sunbeams from The Heart: A Collection of Twelve Romantic Short Stories".

This short story was also featured in the July 18th, 2014, "Summer Collector's Edition" of "The Lady" magazine, U.K.

Sunbeams is available worldwide on Amazon as an e-book at $2.99 and in paperback (regular print $6.99 and large print $7.99).

FREE BOOK OF SHORT STORIES!

At this special time of year, I am delighted to make available to you a FREE gift of my e-book "Moonbeams from The Soul: A Collection of Fourteen Provocative Short Stories"! This will be FREE for five days from Saturday, December 19th, until Wednesday, December 23rd, at 11.59 p.m. Pacific Time. "Moonbeams from The Soul" is also available in paperback (regular and large print) and Kindle Unlimited.

If you are in need of some entertainment, this book might just do the trick! From wild temptations to dangerous decisions, it's an eclectic assortment of thought-provoking short stories.

Many of my short stories have appeared in “The Lady” magazine, U.K. As New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman says: “Short stories are tiny windows into other worlds and other minds and other dreams. They are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner.”

Some excerpts from the short stories in Moonbeams from the Soul:

"Although she expected it, the sight of the devil’s mask made her gasp. The man had a whistle in his mouth and carried cowbells and maracas. She led the man across the room...." - from "The Merry Widow".

"I knew it was a mistake. I don’t know why I did it. Well, actually, I do know why. I’m no different from the other girls in my graduating class of that year...." - from "Love Made Me Do It".

"She wore shorts and a sleeveless top. Her hair gleamed in the sunshine. To him, at that moment, she looked even more beautiful in the daytime than she had in the moonlight...." - from "Queen Bee".

"The moles stared at me from some kind of solution in the jar! They looked like shrivelled raisons. I couldn’t drink any more coffee!" - from "The Palms".

Some Amazon Reviews of Moonbeams from The Soul:

"What a marvellous collection of stories. They will reel you in, entertain and refresh you, and have you eager to go on to the next one!"

"I love FK books. They always leave you wanting more or dying to know what's next in the series."

"These are well-written stories with a twist. Fay Knowles is good at describing everyday life where you gradually discover that nothing is quite what it seems."

SCENES AROUND NASSAU TOWN

This fruit and veg stall opposite Arawak Cay in Nassau has been running for umpteen years! And still carries on, despite the Pandemic.

Haven't seen the vendor who usually sells sodas and snacks at the traffic lights below Government House for a very long time. Wonder if he'll start up again now some restrictions have been relaxed.

Poor little Nassau. Down town is so quiet. However, visitors are trickling back in so I'm sure we're heading for happier days!

FAMILY COLLABORATION!

THE WRITER’S PRAYER, a poem by yours truly, was originally published as “The Evergreen Prayer” in the Winter 2013 edition of the British magazine “Evergreen”. My husband Erskine, a vocalist/guitarist, loved my poem so much he put music to it, I added a chorus, and he recorded it as a song. Produced by our son Gavin Knowles/The Element Studio.

She longs to escape from it all, but is tied down to eking a living with grueling shifts in a local restaurant.

DEVELOPING AN ARTICLE INTO A MEMOIR!

My lovely Scottish Granny in the Scottish snow!
(one of the photos that appears in The Scottish Connection)

Writing Tip: Consider developing what started out as a feature article into a full length book! After I returned to Scotland with my mother and young sons to revisit our Scottish roots, I wrote an article about our trip. I submitted the article to various publications over the years, but at 4,000+ words it appeared it was too long. Eventually a prestigious Canadian magazine editor said he loved it and wanted to use it. Unfortunately, a year later the publisher decided against it. I think they just couldn't find where to fit it in, as it was so long!

Then a light went off in my brain. Why not develop the article into a book? I dug out copies of my ancestors' marriage, birth and death certificates which had been in my late mother's possession, so I could add that information. And I scanned old photos plus some from the Scottish trip.

I put it all together and "The Scottish Connection: A Journey Back - Mini-memoir", with Scottish ancestry, historical facts, genealogy, comparable prices, geographical descriptions, personal anecdotes, nostalgia and precious old photos, was released on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback!

Take a look at it, if you like. There's a sample "Look Inside" on Amazon - CLICK HERE

They are so creative and talented! My nephew Tom Bailey is on bass, singer is Laura Nield, guitarist Gaz Edmunds and drums Andrew Hill. COVID-19 RULES IN PARADISE

Me jogging in our tiny front garden!

The Covid-19 rules in The Bahamas are always changing back and forwards under the Executive Orders that are imposed by the "Competent Authority", aka our Prime Minister. And every time it's announced that the PM is going to give an address, we all quiver in our shoes! There's panic at the food stores as people are thrown into fear that we might have another lock down.

Fortunately, it looks as though complete lock downs are on hold for now (and I hope they'll never come about), but there's always the possibility of some form of shut down if Covid-19 cases don't level off.

Right now on New Providence the only time we can exercise at any hour (except for the 10 p.m. - 5 a.m. curfew) is in our own "yards"! We are allowed to exercise in our "immediate neighbourhood" from 5 a.m. - 9 a.m. and go to the beaches and parks then, but I'm not an early bird!

Longing for freedom and long walks.

LOCKDOWN STRESS!

What a time this is! We're under a two week lockdown on New Providence. Except for essential workers, we can't go anywhere at all on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday (except for exercising in our yards or 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. in our immediate neighbourhood). We've had lockdowns before, but none as long as this one. It's rumoured that it might be extended and may even be more restrictive!

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, food stores, gas stations, hardwares (but only for those carrying lumber and concrete, and for curbside pick up only), pharmacies (curbside pick up only), and banks (mornings only) are open. We're supposed to just go there, shop, and return quickly to our homes (hah!). One person per family is supposed to be a designated shopper (that's not working!).

Because of the severe restrictions, on the days we can go to any of these, it's crazy with people crowding and standing in long lines, many not wearing masks or wearing them incorrectly. The overcrowding must be defeating the purpose of trying to reduce the number of positive Covid-19 cases. Then supplies fly off the shelves, so shoppers have to dash from one store to another.

Erskine had a terrible rush yesterday trying to get enough groceries for the weekend. Then our water delivery guy couldn't make it, as they were restricted to only three days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday - plus Saturdays for essential workers only). He said he could drop our water today. However, by the time it got to mid-afternoon, we were getting worried. We didn't have enough drinking water to last until Monday. Anyway, he eventually got here and saved the day.

Someone we know says he had quite a time at a gas station the other day. When he paid for his gas, the cashier angrily informed him that the $20 bill he gave her was counterfeit. He tried to replace it, but was short $1.51. He told her he would have to come back to pay the $1.51. She didn't want to accept that, but in the end he drove off, got more money from his house and returned to pay her the $1.51. He worked out later that the counterfeit note had been in change he was given at a food store.

If Covid-19 doesn't kill us, all this lockdown stress will!

NOSTALGIC SCOTTISH MEMORIES

Do you have Scottish roots or do you just love the blockbuster movie "Braveheart"?!

In this nostalgic, illustrated mini-memoir I share memories of my journey back to Scotland with my mother and young sons, to revisit our Scottish roots.

“THE SCOTTISH CONNECTION” contains a wealth of information - Scottish ancestry, historical facts, genealogy, comparable prices, geographical descriptions, personal anecdotes, nostalgia and precious old photos.

EXCERPT: “We pressed on towards the border. Our AA book informed us we would cross the line of the old Roman ‘Hadrian's Wall’ before the boundary between England and Scotland. Just after the Border Forest, a carload of excited, waving people passed us going in the opposite direction. We knew we had reached Scotland at last! The boys cheered. My mother and I were home again, in that land of soaring mountains, rushing burns and ancient glens.”

A BLAST FROM THE PAST!

This brightened up my day! A friend sent me this newspaper cutting that appeared on The Bideford History Page of Facebook. The photo was taken about 60 years ago! I did have a faded copy, but it was minus the caption.

It was interesting to have a reminder about "Bideford Musicals", that I'd once belonged to. I'm second from the left ("Fay Johanson").

I also did ballet as a young child and at the age of twenty was a chorus girl in a production at The Exeter Little Theatre, Devon. As well as a writer, I'd always wanted to be a singer or a dancer!

HURRICANE ISAIAS PAYS US A VISIT!

Neighbours lose shingles during Hurricane Isaias

Well, we have survived. Hurricane Isaias has left The Bahamas!

When I woke up Saturday morning to crazy weather, I felt quite nervous. The power was off, wind howling and rain beating down. We had been warned that Isaias would bring quite a lot of rain and possible storm surges.

It reminded me of Hurricane Matthew, which I wrote about HERE. I prayed we wouldn't get another one like that - or even worse, a "Hurricane Dorian", which Grand Bahama and Abaco suffered terribly from in September 2019!

However, we were lucky. My husband Erskine summarized it for me. When Isaias approached us, the eye was 45 miles south of New Providence. Hurricane force winds were only 35 miles from eye, so we were 10 miles away from hurricane force winds and only had tropical force winds. The eye of the storm passed over Andros, which is west of us. By Saturday evening we knew we were in the clear.

We understand there has been no severe damage, no injuries and no deaths anywhere in The Bahamas. However, some homes have been affected by high water from the rain in low lying areas. My heart goes out to those residents. Our power was restored after eight hours. Others were not so fortunate.

Now Isaias is heading for the Carolinas as a Tropical Storm (possibly becoming a hurricane again). I wonder if everyone will be able to pronounce the name Isaias properly by the time it dissolves!

WHY?

A fellow author in the U.S. reached out to me the other day, saying: "You've been quiet lately. Is everything OK with you and yours?"

That's a good question. I guess he meant because I haven't been continually writing, marketing my books and revealing plans for more books, as I usually do! Also, I haven't been saying anything about how things are in The Bahamas and there sure has been a lot going on.

I think a lot of writers worldwide are grappling with the current Corona virus situation. I see them discussing this on writers' forums. But I don't know what's up with me! I keep trying to pull myself together and get on with it. Get on with what though?

I do go through the motions - doing secretarial work for my family, cooking, cleaning, exercising as much as is currently allowed, and so on...... But something's missing and it's not just the writing or not being able to physically socialize with friends!

Why am I like this right now? I think this question will only be answered after everything gets back to "normal", whenever and whatever that will be!

Nevertheless, here I am writing again, so maybe this is the best way to go right now. If you are having difficulty applying yourself to whatever you love to do, don't worry about it. It will all come back to you at just the right time. I truly believe that!

ANOTHER FIVE STAR REVIEW!

SOME PAGES FROM "DANGEROUS DEVOTION"

Another fabulous Five Star Review of my novel "Dangerous Devotion" by "Dom G"! ....."The book is a good read with a lot of plot twists that keep to the end. You can tell the author's familiarity with the different places and the knowledge of them. This kept me engaged straight to the end and is definitely worthy to be made into a short film. Although I thought there would be more sad endings for the different characters, this is truly a happy ending type of novel. I'd recommend this especially for those living in The Bahamas."

I am so grateful to the lovely readers who take the time to leave their comments on Amazon about my books!

"Dangerous Devotion" is set in The Bahamas (Nassau and Long Island) and Scotland, with scenes in Fort Lauderdale, New York, London and Devon.

Read a few pages of "Dangerous Devotion" in the book's Amazon "Look Inside" HERE

GRADUAL RELAXATION OF COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS IN THE BAHAMAS

J F Kennedy Drive, New Providence, May 30, 2020

I ventured out Friday for the first time in ten weeks, except for walking for exercise in our immediate neighbourhood (could only do this Mondays to Fridays during curfews, as we have been completely locked down at weekends). Erskine has been our shopper and I have been the one who stayed at home.

He took me to look for a large umbrella in the pharmacy, to help protect me from the increasing heat of the sun when we go walking. As it happens, starting Tuesday, we'll be allowed to go further afield to walk, so we'll be able go to a shady area. The umbrella wasn't much use anyway!

It was as if I had been in a coma for a while and coming out of it, everything seemed to have changed! People in masks lining up outside food stores, anxious eyes everywhere. Yet, in the pharmacy one employee stocking a cooler wasn't wearing a mask. I felt uneasy and asked "shouldn't you be wearing a mask?" She didn't answer, but after a while reappeared with a mask hanging from one ear!

Then I followed Erskine into the food store, somewhat tenuously. It wasn't a pleasant experience, as I had to spend most of my time dodging people in the aisles, who didn't seem to care if they bumped into me!

I was actually glad to get home again!

Please note: Ending soon! - Special .99 cents price each for my latest release DEADLY DECEIT IN PARADISE (Book Two in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series) and DANGEROUS DEVOTION (Book One in the Buchanan Mystery Romance Series)! Both books are also available in paperback.

EXMOUTH AIR RADIO, DEVON, ENGLAND, AUTHOR INTERVIEW

I was excited and most honoured to be invited on ExmouthAiR Radio, Devon, England, by U.K. Radio Presenter Howard James.

CLICK HERE for my live radio interview with Howard James on ExmouthAiR Radio Sunday, May 10th, 2020! For my interview start listening at 1:15:50.

You can also listen to the interview on my YouTube channel HERE

ExmouthAiR Radio is "an award-winning local radio station" in Devon, England (106.4FM). All of their shows "are produced by local presenters offering an exclusively local radio service that promotes local events and life in Exmouth and the surrounding areas."

Howard tells me that the area covered by ExmouthAiR Radio is "a greater part of East Devon plus the Exe Estuary town (Teignmouth/Dawlish areas). Also down to Newton Abbott and Torbay....also Exeter/Topsham." - including of course, Exmouth.

Howard James started his radio career as a volunteer at Hospital Radio in Exeter and then moved on to BBC Radio Devon in Exeter and Plymouth, presenting programmes at either end of the day over a period of around twenty years. He also worked in commercial radio at Orchard FM in Taunton (along with popular U.K. television host Jeremy Kyle) and Lantern FM in Bideford.

The programme Howard James presents every Sunday morning (10 a.m. until 12 noon U.K. time), features local guests "chatting about local things both serious and not so serious plus a sprinkling of music, features and hopefully some cheery banter." He invited me on his live show because of my connection to East Devon. He had read one of my British press releases and wanted to interview me about my published books.

I discovered from chatting to Howard prior to my radio interview that he used to walk from the BBC Radio Devon studio in Exeter down St. David's Hill to buy snacks from St. David's General Stores. My husband Erskine owned and operated St. David's General Stores at one time!

LIVE EXMOUTH AIR RADIO INTERVIEW!

Well, I've done it! Had a live radio interview early this morning by Exmouth Air Radio Presenter Howard James. My first one ever! Had to get up at 5.15 a.m. for 6.20 a.m. start (Bahamas time) and I'm not normally an early riser!

The interview lasted about 40 minutes and from Tuesday will run 24/7 for two weeks on Exmouth Air Radio's website. The segment will be downloadable from Tuesday, so I'll post the link when it's available. Howard had contacted me about my books after reading one of my Devon press releases.

VE DAY MEMORIES

In a May 1945 letter written to his brother in Australia by my father William ("Bill") Johanson, who was in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War (Sergeant Instrument Repairer on planes, stationed in the U.K.), he said: "I didn't do much celebrating on VE Day. I was at a training camp for a Central Trade Test Board on that day, although naturally it was cancelled until the next day. I passed the Board and am now Group I, which means quarter of a sterling extra per day. I passed through London to and from where I had the Board and everyone was celebrating in a big way with flags flying everywhere, and huge crowds all over the place, but of course they deserved a celebration!"

I have the original of this letter - what a treasure!

WRITING IS AN ESCAPE!

WHY write?! Above is an excerpt from Chapter Two "The Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of Writing" in my writer's guide "How to Be The Best Writer Ever".

One of the reasons for writing, "It's an escape", is particularly pertinent during this difficult time. If you're getting "cabin fever" being locked down or stuck at home in a curfew, get on your computer or scribble in a note pad and just write. Write anything you like. No one ever needs to read it! Writing in times of trouble is really therapeutic.

RAIN, LOVELY RAIN!

Rain, lovely rain! We really needed this. Thank you God!

Here's an excerpt from "Deadly Deceit In Paradise", Book Two in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series, which features a rainy scene:-

"Natalie and Fredrik splashed along the shoreline towards the old house. Just as they reached it and climbed up the pathway to the wooden deck, a downpour of rain caught them. They ran inside the old building and collapsed onto the floor, laughing."

UPCOMING EXMOUTH AIR RADIO INTERVIEW!

I am so excited! Exmouth Air (Devon, England) Radio Presenter Howard James will be interviewing me on his show Sunday, May 10th, about the latest book in my Buchanan Mystery Romance Series, Deadly Deceit In Paradise (as well as Book One in the series - Dangerous Devotion), with questions such as what was my inspiration for the books; my background; my link to Exmouth; why I moved to The Bahamas and my life here; why I moved to Devon years ago and my life there; my published work; how people can find out more and obtain my books; and future plans for more books.

Howard James, a former BBC radio presenter, has a long career in broadcasting. And Exmouth Air covers a wide area that includes Exmouth, Teignmouth, Dawlish, Topsham, Sidmouth, and Budleigh Salterton.

I will have to get up early for the interview, as the U.K. is five hours ahead of The Bahamas. Won't be easy, but I'll do anything for my craft!

A couple of days after the interview, it will run 24/7 for two weeks on their website and I will be able to download it from there!

Don't forget, the e-books for Deadly Deceit In Paradise and Dangerous Devotion are currently available for down load at a special price (limited time only). The books are also available in paperback.

LOCK DOWN BAHAMAS!

We're in lock down now in The Bahamas from last night Wednesday 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 14th, except for essential workers! Then the following Friday nights throughout the rest of April we'll be in lock down again until the Monday mornings!
