TRAVEL STIMULATES THE IMAGINATION!

Enjoying Starbucks coffee in Barnes & Noble
(imagining my books lining the shelves!)

Happy New Year! Erskine and I just got back from spending a week in Florida over Christmas. It was really hectic! We wanted to shop for items that we either can’t get here in Nassau or are much cheaper over there! However, we know now that Christmas is not the best time for that. Crowds of people all had the same idea! We had a great time though!

I say in my writer’s guide “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!”: “I write like crazy when I take a trip off the island, as there are always so many new sights and experiences. I also pick up lots of brochures and flyers to refer to later.” Unfortunately I must confess that I didn’t do any of this, as we were on the go the whole time! However, I did get ideas for some new short stories. There’s nothing like travelling to stimulate the imagination!

SEASON'S GREETINGS!

This is a photo from the mid nineties when Erskine and I managed The Islands Club, oceanfront condominiums opposite Quality Food Store, Cable Beach, and next to what became the luxury Bayroc condominiums. We lived in a lovely little cottage on the grounds and this was the gorgeous beach where The Islands Club was situated.

Most of the residents back then were “snow birds”, who flew down to The Bahamas in the winter to escape the freezing cold weather in the north. Usually there were no owners in residence during the summer.

I hope you are enjoying this special time of the year wherever you are. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyeux Noël, Feliz Navidad….! May your holiday season and the New Year be filled with much joy, happiness and success.

CHRISTMAS DONE COMIN'

CHRISTMAS DONE COMIN'
by Fay Knowles

Christmas done comin'
Junkanooers in da shacks
Please give a dollar for
Salvation Army good acts

If you ain't gat a dollar
A quarter will do
If you ain't gat a quarter
Then God bless you!

(Just a little ditty I once wrote! Salvation Army members and supporters are out and about in Nassau collecting money in their kettles to help the poor. And Junkanoo groups are in the shacks feverishly creating stunning costumes and floats for the Christmas and New Year Junkanoo parades!)

IN REMEMBRANCE

William & Josephine Johanson

In remembrance of all those who served in the two World Wars. My father William (“Bill”) Johanson was in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, stationed in the UK as an Instrument Repairer on planes. He must have seen a lot of his pals take off from the air base where he was stationed and tragically not return.

He met and married my Scottish mother Josephine (“Joy”) MacDonald Johanson during the war. Mum served in the Women’s Royal Air Force as a Radio Telephony Operator at a Receiving/Transmission Station, giving pilots on active duty bearings for home. Sadly, many of them did not make it back.

At the time of this article Karon was working on her romantic crime novel “A Cosy Crime”.

DOWNSIZING!

Unfortunately, I haven’t been doing much writing lately as we’re downsizing! After years of dragging our “stuff” across the Atlantic twice and back and forwards to Freeport and Long Island, we finally realized that it’s time to simplify our lives!

I’ve been busy shredding the contents of old files, including those from when we had a real estate company. And we’ve been selling or giving away household items and collectibles that we haven’t used in years.

It’s a wonderful sense of freedom! I will get back to my writing soon though. In the meantime, lots of plots and stories are pecolating in my mind!

I have some tips about organizing your life in Chapter Five (“Time Management”) of my book “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!” CLICK HERE!

PROMOTIONAL WRITING!

ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN "THE PUNCH"
ABOUT THE OLD "LE SHACK"

As I say in Chapter 13 of my writer’s guide “HOW TO BE THE BEST WRITER EVER!”, “Promotional writing (Public Relations work) can be fun, provide additional income and if you write it well, you may get a by-line.”

I tell readers of my writer’s guide that included in the many pastures for promotional writing is the large number of restaurants that want short pieces submitted to the local press, to attract customers to their eateries.

I recently had an email out of the blue from someone I don’t know saying: “Are you the daughter of the owners of the much missed Le Shack?  If so, I spoke with you back in 2015. Before I go any further I just want to make sure I have the correct person.”

I am not the person he was referring to, but he might have seen my 1992 article about Le Shack that was published in some of our local newspapers. I used to submit different versions to the local press – for The Punch I would write something short and “punchy”; The Tribune I’d send a version of the article aimed at their “Youth Beat” page; and the other newspapers would receive basically the same article as each other.

I dug out a copy of my “Le Shack” article that was published in the Punch and emailed it to the enquirer. I also told him I wasn’t the daughter of the previous owners, but wished him luck in locating them. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help him. I don’t know where they are now.

“Le Shack” is now called “Green Parrot”, located on East Bay Street, Nassau, Bahamas, and is just as popular!

“HOW TO BE THE BEST WRITER EVER” is an informal guide and source of inspiration for new and not so new writers worldwide. Always wanted to write a book? Or are you a writer whose career is going nowhere? This uplifting writer’s guide outlines the craft and how to become the best writer ever in fifteen straightforward and easy to understand chapters.

CREATING BELIEVABLE CHARACTERS!

When writing about a character in your story or novel, put yourself in their place; get yourself inside their head; feel what that character feels; desire what that character desires; and fear what that character fears. Then you will create a truly believable character!

More writing tips in my writer’s guide – “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!”. Available as an e-book and in paperback.

SECOND CHANCES ABOUND IN LOVE AT SUNSET!

A Long Island Bahamas beach. It was a beach similar
to this that the wily Zachary Tate in “Love at Sunset”
tried to get to when he had an unexpected confrontation!

Second chances abound in “Love at Sunset”! Violet and Gordon rekindle their decades-old attraction for each other, a career criminal has the opportunity to change his life, and a hard-working, single mother takes a chance that could improve her struggling existence. All of this against the backdrop of life in The Bahamas and Scotland where the main characters, Violet and Gordon, have a foothold in each.

A major hurricane attacks the Bahama Islands, threatening life and property, while in Scotland sinister strangers try to prevent dreams coming to fruition. The stunning beaches and quaint settlements of Long Island in The Bahamas contrast with the inner city of Nassau; the disparity between poverty and wealth is revealed; and the lengths that some would go to steal and defraud for financial gain is unexpected and shocking.

Love and romance also feature predominantly throughout the novel, with the passion of the young and some not so young! “Gripping, alluring and so wonderfully romantic on many different levels.” – Amazon Customer.

Paperback copies of “Love at Sunset” are available at Logos Bookstore, Harbour Bay, Nassau – or CLICK HERE to purchase the novel on Amazon (e-book and paperback versions).

NEW WRITER’S GUIDE JUST RELEASED!

I am thrilled to announce the release of my new writer’s guide “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!” This is an informal guide and source of inspiration for new and not so new writers worldwide.

“How to Be the Best Writer Ever!” is available on Amazon as an e-book and in paperback.

Over a decade ago, one of my sons said to me: “Mum, you should share your writing experience with others. Give me some content and I’ll put a website up for you.”

I threw some ideas together and sent them to my son. He uploaded them in separate sections on a website, and the seeds of a writer’s guide were planted. I had a button on the site for visitors to leave their email addresses if they wanted to be notified when the website would be available in print.

This blog eventually replaced the writer’s website. However, I still had a subscriber’s list of active or aspiring writers from the website who had been eagerly waiting for me to publish the promised writer’s guide.

Now, many years later, I delved back in my mind to all the writing experience and training that I’ve had over the years and wrote about it. I used the original information from the website as a foundation.

I wanted to help those who longed to write books, articles, short stories, poems or screenplays; and others whose writing career was going nowhere.

My promise has been fulfilled with the publication of “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!" This has come a long way since I first put a few tips online about writing!

This uplifting writer’s guide outlines the craft and how to become the best writer ever in fifteen straightforward and easy to understand chapters that enlighten and inform; inspire and encourage; educate and advise.

If you wish to be led and inspired to reach your highest writing potential, you can get “How to Be the Best Writer Ever!” HERE!

A BAHAMAS INDEPENDENCE DAY TO REMEMBER!

BAHA MAR FOYER - BAHAMAS
INDEPENDENCE DAY DECORATIONS
Today has been the 45th Anniversary of Bahamas Independence. Before The Bahamas became Independent on July 10th, 1973, this island nation was a British Colony. My husband Erskine even had a British passport up until then. He says there was a long building on the Prince George Wharf that housed the passport office. After Independence The Bahamas became a British Commonwealth country.

When we lived in the U.K. in the eighties, I wrote to the Bahamian High Commission in London, requesting contacts for Bahamians living in the U.K., so I could approach them to write feature articles about them. Instead, the Bahamian High Commission said they would send Erskine and me an invitation to the Bahamas Independence festivities in London, where we would be able to meet other Bahamians. Mr. Richard Demeritte was the Bahamian High Commissioner at the time.

We lived in Exeter, Devon, which was a four hour National Express bus journey from London. Erskine owned and operated St. David’s General Stores and could only get one day off for the Independence event (my mother used to work part-time for him and she looked after the shop so we could go to London).

We set off early that July 10th day. When we arrived in London we caught a tube train to get to the Bahamian High Commission. There was a restaurant nearby. We had something to eat there and later changed our clothes in their restrooms!

When we entered the Bahamian High Commission that evening, we left our bag in the cloakroom and proceeded to the venue. The barker, dressed in a red uniform, at the door took our invitation and announced very grandly: “Mr. and Mrs. Erskine Knowles!” We continued on into the ballroom and began mingling.

It was a wonderful evening, full of laughter, good Bahamian music, dancing and comradery. As the event came to an end, we made our way back to the bus station via the tube. The bus swooped in, picked us up, and we slept most of the way back to Exeter.

Everything would have been perfect if I hadn’t left my handbag on the bus when it stopped at Exeter Bus Station! Erskine woke me up and I rushed off the bus with him. It wasn’t until the bus swiftly disappeared in the distance that I realized I’d left my handbag on the bus with our car and house keys in it! We had only brought the larger bag with our clothes. On top of that, it started to pour with rain.

The plan had been to catch a taxi to Erskine’s shop where our car was parked. However, when we phoned for a taxi from a public phone booth, for some strange reason all of the taxis were miles away in Plymouth!

We started walking through the deserted city and when we came across the Rougemont Hotel thought we would try calling another taxi company from there. However, the hotel’s doors were closed and locked!

We continued walking and eventually reached St. David’s Railway Station, but couldn’t pick up our car, as we didn’t have the keys! We continue walking across the railway and up into Exwick where we lived.

One of our college age sons was living with us and the other son was away at boarding school. Unfortunately, the son who was home slept like a log and it took ages to wake him up. Eventually a few rocks thrown at his window brought him to our rescue!

The next day I reported to the bus company from my work that my handbag had been left on the bus, which had travelled all the way down to Cornwall. The following day the bag arrived in a National Express box, all safe and sound, with the keys in it!

It had been a Bahamas Independence Day to remember!

THE GROUNDSKEEPER RELEASED IN TIME FOR 45TH BAHAMIAN INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY!

THE GROUNDSKEEPER is released today! Another exciting read by bestselling Bahamian author Tanya R. Taylor. Just in time for the 45th Anniversary of Bahamas Independence! This is the 8th book in Tanya’s “Cornelius Saga Series” and her 21st work of popular fiction.

“Jason Davis thought he had an ordinary job, but this one nearly cost him his life! Is six feet deep really deep enough? Mira Cullen is drawn into a mystery which has investigators puzzled. Although it is not ordinary practice for them to seek the expertise of a psychic, the Police Department is not left with much of a choice.

“What is ultimately uncovered will shock all of those connected to the case and expose something so sinister, it’s bound to rock the community for ages to come.”

LATER IN LIFE ROMANCE!

My Romantic Suspense novel “Love at Sunset” is being featured on LaterInLifeRomance.comCLICK HERE!

You’ve come to the right place. Here you will find an assortment of stories with heroes and heroines you can easily relate to and be inspired by. The mantra and theme of all these stories is that it truly is never too late in life to find romance and love… and great sex. We hope you enjoy what you find here. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO US!

Erskine and I have been married 52 years today! I thank God for bringing Erskine Knowles into my life when I was only passing through Nassau on my way around the world. We met a month after I got here and were married the following year!

Before our wedding day Erskine told me as long as we always pulled together and did not pull apart we would make it! Wise words from the young man he was then. We have always borne those words in mind over our many years of more ups than downs!

THE LOVE OF A READER

It is most heartening when a reader tells an author how much they enjoyed their book. And this goes for friends and family too! This morning a long time family friend, Bill Tizard, who bought a paperback copy of my romantic suspense novel “Love at Sunset”, told me that he loved it! Not only that, but he has read it twice and plans on reading it a third time after a brief break, so that it would all be new to him again!

Bill said he loves the main characters Violet and Gordon and finds the plot really exciting. He also said he immersed himself in the settings and felt like he was actually going to Scotland himself and “enjoying the atmosphere”!

Bill doesn’t have a computer and is not online, so I am happy that he can bury himself in a book and enjoy being whisked away to fascinating places and interesting people! Thank you, Bill!

Here’s the plot for “Love at Sunset”:

“Facing imminent danger and fierce opposition to love a second time around, Violet and Gordon seek a new life in Scotland, thousands of miles away from The Bahamas, but trouble soon catches up with them. The couple finds themselves in and out of one adventure after another!

”In the meantime, an unscrupulous attorney appears on the scene, along with a crooked realtor. What they do and the extent they would go to leads to a shocking ending. Greed, jealousy, family secrets and bitter grudges worm their way throughout this story!”

MADE IT “TO” THE ROYAL WEDDING!

Well, I managed to get up early and had the T.V. on by a few minutes after 7 a.m. Harry and Meghan were already at the altar, but there have been enough reruns during the day for me to catch up.

What an amazing wedding. It was traditional in many ways, but sprinkled liberally with aspects of modern day times. The bride was beautiful and the groom so handsome. The bride’s mother was lovely too and very serene – a groom can always get an idea of what their bride will be like later in life from how their mother looks!

Meghan apparently had all of the Commonwealth emblems embroidered into her veil. Living in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas we will look forward to hearing more about Harry and Meghan’s plans for getting further involved in the Commonwealth. I have great hopes that this couple, who show so much love for each other and a mutual passion for humanitarian causes, will make a difference in the world.

THE ROYAL WEDDING

(Photo by Leah Kelley from Pexels)

So Prince Charles is giving Meghan Markle away on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Harry! I always thought it had to be someone on the bride's side of the family if her father wasn’t available. My husband’s boss gave me away when I got married in The Bahamas. He was British, so sort of represented my side. Anyway, best wishes to the happy couple!

I will try to get up early tomorrow morning, as I really want to watch this exciting event on television. The wedding starts at 12 noon UK time, but it will only be 7 a.m. here in The Bahamas.
